An independent investigation commissioned by the World Health Organization uncovered more than 80 instances of sex abuse during the agency’s response to an ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Al Jazeera is reporting.

The investigation report released this week implicated 20 staff members who were members of international teams as well as local hires, according to the news organization.

The investigators were able to identify 83 incidents, including nine reports of rape. Perpetrators did not use birth control and when victims turned up pregnant, they were often forced to get abortions. WHO provided no support for the victims, Al Jazeera reported.

WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus formally apologized to the victims and said during a news conference, “It is my top priority that the perpetrators are not excused but held (to) account.”
