A memorial for Jelani Day, the once-missing graduate student whose body was found in the Illinois River last month, is being planned for Wednesday on the campus of Alabama A & M University in Huntsville.

Day, 25, was last seen alive August 24th. He was a graduate of Alabama A & M and a graduate student at Illinois State University. 

News stories circulated about Day’s disappearance and his body was positively identified after an outcry over the lack of media coverage and investigation into cases of missing Black people, following the national coverage of the disappearance and death of Gabby Petito, a white woman who vanished during a road trip with her fiance.

Day’s Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers at AAMU have circulated an online petition calling for federal and state investigations into Day’s death and criticizing the way police in Bloomington, Ill., have handled the case,
