Residents of the majority-Black city of Benton Harbor, Mich., near Chicago, have been advised by state officials to avoid drinking, cooking or bathing with their tap water due to lead contamination.

The problem is not new, The Guardian reports, and residents have been contending with lead-contaminated water for three years now as state and local officials have failed to intervene in an effective way. 

The state has promised to expend free water distribution this month, but activists say Michigan officials need to do more about the poor water qualify.
