Oakland is celebrating the 55th-year anniversary of the Black Panther Party, which was founded there.

Among the activities will be the unveiling of a sculpture of cofounder Huey P. Newton by artist Dana King, and an art exhibition featuring works by artists from the social movement, the Bay City News Foundation reported.

Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party in Oakland in 1966. The observances coincide with Black Panther Party History Month.
