Activists in Ivory Coast in West Africa are calling for greater support of a woman who has accused one of the country’s national ministers of rape, Africa News reports.
The victim is accusing Ivorian Minister for Reconciliation Kouadio Konan Bertin of rape. The victim’s lawyer has withdrawn from the case and the Ivorian League for Women’s Rights says it cannot afford to hire a replacement.
“In this kind of case it’s extremely, extremely difficult to get a lawyer to go with you,” Carelle Goli, the league’s legal officer, told Africa News. “The name, the reputation of the clients, everything you can imagine is at stake,” Goli said.
The woman has filed a police report and Bertin, in return, has filed a lawsuit accusing her of libel.
