The murder of a 28-year-old school teacher of color near her London home is gaining global attention after the debate triggered in the United States over lesser coverage of missing people of color.
Sabina Nessa, whose body was found in a London park last Saturday, received little attention from the media until a backlash from social media users who tweeted “Say her name” as they called on the British press to do better, The Washington Post reports.
Stateside, the public has called attention to the widespread coverage of the death of Gabby Petito, a 22-year-old white woman whose body was found in Wyoming after a road trip with her fiance. Many compared massive media coverage to the comparatively little attention that is paid to missing people of color.
In the United Kingdom, the public has compared coverage of Nessa’s death with that of Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old white woman murdered by a police officer earlier this year. Everard’s case reached news outlets around the world without a social media push.
