It’s official, you can call him “Mr. 4,000.”
Stephen Curry made his 4,000th career 3-pointer in the third quarter Thursday of the Golden State Warriors’ game against the Sacramento Kings at Chase Center. Needing two 3-pointers to reach the mark, he followed a first-half catch-and-shoot triple with a pump-fake-and-shoot 3-pointer from the right wing.
“I never could have imagined,” head coach Steve Kerr said pregame. “He was obviously a great 3-point shooter but something like that requires incredible longevity. Here we are a decade later and he’s making (300) or 400 every year. … He just changed the entire game. He changed the way everybody thought about the 3-point shot.”
The greatest shooter in basketball history, Curry turns 37 on Friday. He made his first 3-pointer Oct. 30, 2009 against the Phoenix Suns in his second NBA game. In the closing minutes of the first half, he ran around a down screen to the top of the key and stepped into a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer.
Since then, he has established records for: the most 3-pointers in NBA history (4,000 and counting); the most 3-pointers in a single season (402, 2015-16); the most seasons leading the league in 3-pointers (eight); the most consecutive games with a 3-pointer (268); the most 3-pointers in playoff history (618). And many, many more.
Curry passed sharpshooting legend Ray Allen (2,973) on Dec. 14, 2021 for the most career 3-pointers in NBA history and began play Thursday more than 800 clear of James Harden of the Los Angeles Clippers, who has the second most with 3,127.
“What stands out to me is his unwavering confidence. He can have a 1-for-10 game and then the next game, he’s even more likely to have a big night from three,” Kerr said.
“That’s what allows him to shoot that high percentage year after year after year. It’s the obvious skill and the work he puts in and the beautiful stroke, that’s all pretty obvious. But it’s the unwavering confidence that’s amazing to watch.”
