Two Kenyans took home the winners’ titles in the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday.
Albert Korir won the men’s race with a time of 2:08:22 while Peres Jepchirchir took home the women’s title with 2:22:39.
Jepchirchir, who just won a medal at the Tokyo Olympics three months ago, becomes the first Olympic champion to win the New York City Marathon.
“My preparation was short … but I tried my best,” she told The New York Times.
The race marked Korir’s first major championship.
Sunday’s trek through the five boroughs marked the 50th anniversary of the race and a return to the live event after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.
Last month, two Kenyans won the Boston Marathon.
