New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams has announced he is eyeing a run for governor of the Empire State.

The Black politician who formerly served on the New York City Council said he is setting up an exploratory committee to determine the viability of a run for governor.

If Williams goes forward, he would face a primary battle with Gov. Kathy Hochul, a fellow Democrat and former lieutenant governor who took over the governor’s seat on Aug. 24th, after Andrew Cuomo resigned in the wake of sexual harassment allegations.

New York State Attorney General Leticia James, the state’s first Black and first woman to serve in that role, also is reported to be considering a governor’s run.
