The mayor of Jacksonville, Fla., will ask the City Council for approval to spend $1.3 million to remove a Confederate monument from the city’s Springfield Park.

The request is a precarious one because Mayor Lenny Curry will need 13 votes, or a two-thirds majority of the 19-member council, in order to move forward. The Florida Times-Union reports such a majority can be hard to secure.

Right now, the Women of the Southland monument is draped over so that no one has to see it, but Curry is siding with residents who want it gone altogether.

“We hear your voices,” Curry said at a rally earlier this year.
