The Washington Football Team formerly known as the Redskins is retiring number 21, the jersey that belonged to safety Sean Tayor, 14 years after he was fatally shot.

The formal ceremony took place during Sunday’s contest against the Kansas City Chiefs at the team’s home game in Landover, Md., the team announced.

In November 2007, a burglar breaking into Taylor’s Miami home shot him in the leg, severing his femoral artery. The NFL player died the next morning of blood loss. Taylor, 24, was engaged and father to an 18-month-old daughter.
