SPORTS HISTORY IN BLACK: Ron Dayne triumphs over naysayers

There is always a story in college football.

There are amazing feats and records that are broken. When Ron Dayne first set foot on the campus of the University of Wisconsin in 1996, no one was sure what to expect. He was a physical runner with great timing, but when he was a freshman, he was not expected to start.

Dayne earned the starting spot eventually in his freshman year and never relinquished it, becoming one of the most feared running backs in college football. Along that journey, he advanced as a rushing yards leader.

On Nov. 13, 1999, Dayne and the Wisconsin Badgers defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes 41-3. And in that game, Dayne would have a 31-yard run that would make him the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher. Dayne would hold the record until 2016 when San Diego State running back Donnell Pumphrey eclipsed him.
