Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry becomes first active pro athlete to take NCAA administrative role

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is supporting his alma mater, Davidson, as an assistant general manager for its basketball programs, the school announced Monday morning.

As a result, he’s the first active professional athlete active among major American sports to have an administrative role in the NCAA.

With his wife, Ayesha; fellow assistant general manager and Davidson soccer alum Matt Berman, and fellow Wildcats supporters Don and Erica Berman, Curry is forming an eight-figure NIL fund for Davidson student-athletes in men’s and women’s college basketball. He played for the Wildcats from 2006 to 2009 and will advise their men’s and women’s basketball players in his new position.

Said Curry in a statement: “The Davidson experience is top notch. My journey from when I got to Davidson in 2006 to now demonstrated that I had the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level, got a great education, an amazing network through the Davidson alumni and continue to wave the Davidson flag. I want very talented, high character student-athletes to have that same experience.”

As assistant general manager, Curry is working with general manager Austin Buntz, who worked for Under Armour’s global basketball sports marketing team. Curry has represented Under Armour since 2013.

Curry, 36 and in his 16th season with the Warriors, is a four-time NBA champion, two-time NBA MVP, NBA Finals MVP and an 11-time All-Star. He completed his undergraduate degree at Davidson in 2022 and is a member of its Hall of Fame.

“The goal for this is to invest in the next student-athlete that’s coming into Davidson today,” Curry said in his statement. “They don’t have to take cuts on what the market says they deserve to be part of the brand of what it means to be a Davidson scholar-athlete with integrity in your academic experience. The commitment to a four-year graduation process provides countless opportunities professionally in sports or as a game changer in life.”
