San Diego is paying $100,000 to a Black employee of the city’s Streets Division who said he was abused by Latino supervisors because of his race.

The City Council unanimously approved the settlement with Demetris Wimberly, whose troubles began immediately after his hiring in November 2016, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Wimberly reported to a Latino supervisor who favored Latino employees and rarely spoke English on the job, according to a lawsuit filed by Wimberly. The Black employee complained that he was assigned unappealing tasks and shifts, along with fewer opportunities to earn overtime or fulfill assignments that might lead to promotion, according to the Union-Tribune.

Wimberly also complained in his suit that Black workers were frequently put in hazardous situations — more often than Latino colleagues — and that he was forced to return to work a few days after breaking his foot and while still depending on crutches. City officials often ignored his complaints about bias, the lawsuit alleged.

Wimberly ultimately was fired in a situation that he says was created to squash his allegations.
