Just days after authorities closed Barbados off to international travel, the World Health Organization is reporting that all Caribbean countries are experiencing a surge in the pandemic.

Along with Barbados, the Dominican Republic is also in the lead in the Caribbean Basin when it comes to the rising numbers, Caribbean News Now is reporting. Both countries recorded a 40-percent increase last week in cases, said Dr. Carissa Etienne, director of the Pan American Health Organization.

Cases also are rising in Trinidad and Tobago, St. Martin, St. Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla and the Cayman Islands, Etienne said.

The public health official said she is troubled that Caribbean people have been wary of the vaccine and said that the vaccination rate among residents of the Caribbean and Latin America is 41 percent.
