A statue of president and slaver Thomas Jefferson will be removed from the New York City Council chambers some time this year.

The city’s Public Design Commission voted unanimously Monday to get rid of the sculpture of the country’s third president, who owned almost 140 slaves when he died in 1826.

The vote was delayed because a proposal to move the statue to the New York Historical Society raised questions by opponents of whether it was fair to move it to a private facility that charges admission, NBC News is reporting.

The City Council’s Black, Latino and Asian Caucus criticized the delay.

The decision as to where the statue will be moved has not yet been made.
