Sports history in Black: Arthur Ashe won his first U.S. singles championship

During the 1960s, Arthur Ashe was one of the few Black men in the tennis world. He struggled to reach his breakthrough moment on American soil. That moment came for him on August 25, 1968 when Ashe won his first U.S. Singles championship.

This also marked the first time an African-American had won the US Open.
