SPORTS HISTORY IN BLACK: Dave Winfield moves up baseball hit list

Outfielder Dave Winfield was an incredible performer in professional baseball.

He was tall, fast, and powerful, which allowed him to play football and basketball in his
earlier athletic career. Who would know that he would eventually drop football and
basketball for baseball and play professionally for many years?

Winfield would play for multiple teams during his baseball career, but one thing you
could always count on was his bat at home plate. He was a career .283 batter who either hit homeruns or hit the ball where players weren’t.

On May 28, 1994, Winfield—then playing for the Minnesota Twins—passed legendary fbaseball player Rod Carew—first baseman for the California Angels—on the all-time hit list, landing Winfield at number 15.
