SPORTS HISTORY IN BLACK: Drexler traded from Portland to Houston

Guard/forward Clyde Drexler was one of the best basketball players in Portland Trailblazers’ history. He led the team to two NBA Finals appearances, losing to the Pistons in 1990 and the Bulls in 1992.

The Trailblazers were extremely competitive in trying to win the West in other years, but
eventually they were not in the running, as teams were getting better in the West. So, the Trailblazers made a change.

On Feb. 14, 1995, Drexler was traded from Portland to the Houston Rockets, reuniting with his former University of Houston teammate Hakeem Olajuwon. The addition of Drexler to what the Rockets already had gave them just what they needed that season. The Rockets would go on to win the championship, giving Drexler that elusive victory that had avoided him his entire career.
