SPORTS HISTORY IN BLACK: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recognized

The rivalry in the NBA between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics goes back for decades. Players like Hall of Fame centers Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain took part in some of these legendary battles. Both teams have had their share of big wins over each other, whether it was a title-clinching win or a regular-season victory.

In the 1985 NBA Finals, another legendary chapter was written for this series, with the Lakers and Celtics matching up for a championship-level battle. The Lakers would get the better of the Celtics in this big-time matchup, beating the Celtics in a game-of-seven series four games to two, with the series-clincher coming on June 9, 1985. Lakers center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was named the MVP of the NBA Finals, averaging 25.7 points, nine rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.5 blocks.
