SPORTS HISTORY IN BLACK: Ken Griffey Jr. homerun sets a record

One of the sweetest swings in baseball history belongs to Ken Griffey Jr.

The left-hander’s swing was calm and smooth as he hit the baseball. But behind that swing was juice that would develop into homerun-level power. And in 1997 when he played for the Seattle Mariners, Griffey would hit the peak of his powers.

Griffey had never hit 50 homeruns before the 1997 season, but he seemed to figure it
out and topped that mark. On Sept. 26, 1997, Griffey hit his 56th and final homerun of the season playing against the Minnesota Twins.
