SPORTS HISTORY IN BLACK: Malone reaches free throw milestone

In the 1990s, there were plenty of incredible basketball players. Guys like guard Michael Jordan and forward Charles Barkley, along with guard Earvin “Magic” Johnson, captured many imaginations. But one guy who didn’t get that type of shine was forward Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz. Some of that was that he just did not have the personality of the other superstars.

But what cannot be debated is how hard Malone played. He was a fierce competitor on the court and had a feathery jump shot he developed as time went on. He did not get the nickname “The Mailman” for nothing.

He would also roll to the rim, causing defenders to foul him to not get dunked on. And it was because of that, he went to the free throw line a many times during his career. Those free throw numbers would accumulate over the years, moving him up the list for most free throws shot in NBA history. On Feb. 10, 1998, Malone would pass forward Adrian Dantley for fifth place on the all-time free throws list with 6,384.
