Michael Jordan’s name is cemented in NBA basketball history as the greatest of all time for
many, and in 2001, he delivered a welcome surprise to his fans.
The way Jordan dominated the 1990s, winning six titles, was legendary. However, the
game will tell you your time is up, and for Jordan, that happened after he won his final
championship with the Chicago Bulls. Still, just as he retired previously in the 1990s before
returning to the court, Jordan decided he needed more action in the NBA.

Jordan served as part owner and president of basketball operations for the
Washington Wizards from 2000 to 2001, but decided he needed to lace up his shoes again and return to the court. He gave up his ownership stake to meet NBA rules for players and
announced on Sept. 25, 2001, that he was coming out of retirement to join the Wizards
as an active player. Jordan would play two years before retiring again from the NBA,
this time for good.
