SPORTS HISTORY IN BLACK: Randy Smith logs an NBA streak

Randy Smith isn’t a name many know in the NBA. The 6’3” guard was drafted in the seventh round of the 1971 NBA draft by the Buffalo Braves. While Smith, who died in 2009, isn’t known very much in NBA history, he was a player that could be depended on with his ability to be available on the court each and every game.

Smith would play in the NBA from 1971-1983. And for majority of that time, Smith touched the court. He would play in 906 straight games to open his career, which was an NBA record. But on March 13, 1983, Smith’s streak stopped at 906, as he had requested to be waived from the San Diego Clippers in order to try and play for a contender. He was still waiting to clear waivers at the time of the Clippers next game.
