Rickey Henderson was best known for stealing bases throughout his 24 seasons in Major League Baseball. During his career, Henderson stole 1,406 bases, becoming a player that was hard to keep off the basepaths. And on Oct. 7, 1989, he took his record to another level.
Henderson, who played for the Oakland A’s at the time, stole eight bases in a playoff series against the Toronto Blue Jays. From there, what he wanted to do was clear: be the best at stealing bases. Henderson’s record still stands today. He would go on to cause more headaches for opposing teams on the basepaths, but this day was special.
