Sports history in Black: Serena Williams wins first season-ending tennis title

All athletic legends have a start, a peak and an ending. Michael Jordan had that. So did Jerry Rice. LeBron James will eventually experience an athletic ending. Another athlete that had her start, peak and sunset is tennis phenom Serena Williams. She dominated tennis and other star players wilted in her shadow.

But one point people could consider a part of the start to her dominance happened on Nov. 4, 2001. Williams, playing in Munich, Germany, won her first WTA Tour Championships title as Lindsay Davenport defaulted in the final due to a knee injury. This win was Williams’ first season-ending title.
