WATCH: White officials blocked the first Black mayor of this Alabama town from taking office — but the mayor fought back

Two weeks before Martin Luther King died, he hid from the Klan in a safe house in Hale County, Alabama. This corner of the Black Belt has a history of Jim Crow and racial troubles, and in recent months, the white officials in the predominantly Black community of Newbern blocked the first Black mayor from taking office. But all that has changed.
