Ethiopians on Sunday and Monday celebrated the festival of Meskel, an Orthodox Christian observance of the time St. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, searched for the True Cross — the remnants of the cross on which Christ was crucified — while in Jerusalem in the 4th century.

The faithful wear different colored outfits to represent the churches where they worship. Some wear costumes that are directly related to the time and place where Jesus lived.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed extended best wishes to Ethiopians involved in the celebrations, Walta news organization reported. Ahmed urged Ethiopians to remember the country’s heroes and heroines working to preserve the nation’s integrity and rebuild schools and other institutions destroyed by rebels from the country’s Northern Tigray region.
