August 30 _ At the 1991 World Championships in Athletics in Tokyo, Japan, Mike Powell made track and field history. He broke a 23-year-old world record that was set by Bob Beamon in the long jump by jumping 29 feet, 4 ½ inches, which was 2 inches better than what Beamon did. That record still stands to this day.
